We're proud to share that the District Education Officers (DEOs) of Vikarabad, Nizamabad and Medak have granted permissions for the Digital Essentials program to reach government high school students across the three districts this year. ✅✨

This was possible because our District Programme Managers (DPMs) spent months building relationships, trust, and belief in what young people can do when given the right foundation. 🤝🌟

Digital literacy is the language of participation in education, work and civic life. Thousands of students will now learn to read, question and take action in digital spaces because the systems said yes. 🏫📚

📝 Recently, the Digital Equity Core Team team got together to reflect on our initiatives. ✨

Our Core Team and District Field Teams are extensive, well- connected and around 90% of them are women!

These teams grew organically and this made us think, why is this the case, what is it that young women in the districts want, what do they aspire for, what makes them tick? 🧐 🌟

The discussion was anchored in the field stories and experiences shared by our District Program Managers, most of whom are women. This process highlighted the importance of Agency in dealing with Vulnerabilities that young women face in their everyday lives. 🤝💫

When young women are empowered to use the internet to its fullest its potential as a powerful democratizer is unlocked. Our wonderful and dedicated team is a small but powerful example of this. 📱⭐

All in all, it was an enriching experience for the team to be able to step back and contemplate on the purpose of Digital Equity's programs!

A special day at #ZPHS #Jajapur as #Narayanpet Collector Smt. Sikta Patnaik, IAS, DEO Govinda Raju Garu, and AMO Vidya Sagar Garu visited our school to interact with students!

Students confidently demonstrated their #digitalskills, showcasing how they use tools like Google Lens, Google Translate, and spreadsheets to enter data, apply functions, and present group projects. Vidya Sagar Garu engaged them by asking them to draft an official email on the spot, while the Collector inquired about the various tools they had learned during the course.

Spending over an hour with the students, Collector Smt. Sikta Patnaik created a warm and encouraging environment, making the students comfortable enough to express themselves. The students were thrilled to meet her, and she was equally impressed, not just by their skills but also by the young facilitators leading the sessions.

She was pleasantly surprised to learn that these facilitators were local degree college students, just 19-20 years old, mentoring school students with such confidence and expertise!

The visit ended on a joyful note with students and facilitators clicking pictures with her.

Volunteer Leads Meet-Up at B.M. Birla Science Centre 🚀

Volunteer leads from seven districts in Telangana had a meet-up at the B.M. Birla Science Centre. The day-long event started with some games and activities, followed by discussions on the issues faced by youth in the districts, their aspirations, and their expectations from their families. Next, we discussed the plan and targets for 2025-26, which included expanding to neighboring districts where the youth feel confident in creating a youth network. Some participants mentioned that the youth in neighboring districts are already aware of Digital Equity and are eager to start working in their regions.

After an intense three-hour discussion, we walked down from the Birla Science Centre to have a meal together at Kamat Hotel. We then returned to the museum for an immersive experience. For almost all of them, it was their first visit to a science museum. They thoroughly enjoyed exploring the exhibits, conducting physics experiments, and visiting the Dinosaurium. They also had a great time clicking pictures with each other.

The youth shared that they were happy to make friends from across Telangana and expressed their intent to stay in touch. At Digital Equity, we believe that the greatest strength lies in the number of friendships and connections one can build. We hope to see even more friendships forming across the state and the country in the near future.

During one of our school visits, we had the chance to hear from a young girl attending our Digital Essentials program. She excitedly shared what she has learned about cyberbullying, cyberstalking, digital health and well-being, and ways to stay safe online.

It's incredible how confident our youth and children become over 12 weeks of the program.

It’s amazing to see students engaging with our youth facilitators, having fun while learning, and building digital awareness that will empower them for life.

With approval from the Commissioner of Education, we are now working with high schools across 7 districts in Telangana: Medak, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Hyderabad, Jangaon, Narayanpet, and Siddipet (attaching Kamareddy district's permission letter for reference).

This year alone, we’re partnering with over 250 schools, and the program is already underway in Medak, Kamareddy, and Nizamabad.

Designed for Grade 9 students, our 3-month program focuses on bridging learning gaps and empowering children to make informed career decisions.

Together, we’re laying the groundwork for a brighter future, one student at a time.

Grateful to the Government of Telangana for their support in this mission and @svpindia
for helping us get the required permissions. Let’s keep pushing boundaries and make a difference where it matters most.

An orientation and life skills workshop was organized for members of our leadership team from various degree colleges in Medak at Government Degree College, Medak.

The workshop included fun and problem-solving activities. The youth created their own growth plans as part of the workshop and will focus on developing specific life skills during the internship period.

Having completed their digital literacy training, the youth are now prepared to implement the 'Digital Essentials' program for high school students in government schools.

The Digital Equity team signed an MOU with the Government Degree College in Medak. Similarly, we are signing MOUs with several colleges. We have 100 youth from last year who continue to volunteer with us and are actively involved in onboarding more undergraduate youth and supporting them in learning content to be ready to facilitate digital literacy in nearby government schools. This year, our youth network will increase from over 400 to more than 2000, impacting 10,000 children and their families across 7 districts in Telangana.

As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, let's delve into a transformative journey that unfolded in Telangana, bridging the digital divide and empowering youth and children with essential digital skills.

Over 350 enthusiastic young minds from five districts embarked on a mentorship journey, guiding 2400 students towards a brighter digital future. The impact was profound, with 2090 students completing the program, equipped with a newfound understanding of the internet's power.

One of the program's key achievements was enabling students to navigate the vast ocean of online information. They honed their abilities to research, evaluate, and present data, harnessing the internet as a tool for learning and exploration. Equipped with digital literacy akin to using office suites like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, these students gained skills essential for academic success and future careers.

Central to this success were the young facilitators, emerging leaders from Government Degree Colleges. These facilitators not only imparted technical knowledge to participants but also nurtured their own essential leadership and employability skills.

This year marks a new milestone as our target is to impact 10,000 high school students with the help of 2000 youth across Telangana. This ambitious goal reflects our commitment to expanding digital equity and empowering the next generation.

Also, this year, we are introducing GenAI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini into the curriculum. These tools will help students understand their usage while ensuring security from the potential negative impacts of GenAI, promoting responsible and informed digital practices.

The impact of the Digital Essentials program extended beyond the classroom, touching the lives of families and communities. As students embraced digital literacy, they became catalysts for change, empowering their families with newfound knowledge and access to online resources.

The breakneck speed of this transformation, without adequate measures to bridge the gap, could lead to catastrophic consequences.

The statistics paint a stark picture of the digital divide in India:
* 2 out of 3 women in India have never used the internet.
* 99 out of 100 women don't have mobile money accounts.
* 19 out of 20 senior citizen women cannot use the internet independently.
* 8 out of 10 women face some form of online harassment.
* Men with access are about twice as numerous as women.
* 9 out of 10 internet users engage in unproductive activities due to a lack of digital literacy.
* 40 Crore+ underprivileged children lack digital literacy.
